South East Regional Family Support Network (SERFSN)

The SERFSN was set up by members of family support groups in 2003 and supported by Community Based Drugs Initiatives.

The overall aim of the network at that time was to help improve the situation for families coping with drug use by developing, supporting and reinforcing the work of family support groups and working for positive change in policy and practice.

In 2004 the SERFSN researched and produced a best practice booklet for setting up and running Family Support Groups. Following requests by the network it now has representation on the South East Regional Drug Task Force. Application for funding was approved by the Regional Drug Task Force for start up and the network employed a development worker in 2008.

Philosophy

The South East Regional Family Support Network operates from strong community development principles.

The network is a peer led organisation committed to a personal development ethos promoting the inclusion, participation, and empowerment, of its members.

Aim

The overall aim of the network to improve the situation of families coping with drug use by developing, supporting and reinforcing the work of family support groups, by developing best practice, working for positive change in policy and practice by raising awareness about the problems associated with drugs for users and their families.

Objectives

The principle objectives of the SERFSN are to:

  • Support existing family support groups build on strengths, set and work towards goals and ensure groups are sustainable
  • Promote the importance and value of the work done by family support groups
  • Highlight the extent of the drug problem and its effect on families and communities
  • Campaign for better services for drug users and their families
  • Support the involvement of people most affected by the problem in the development and running or services and to ensure that adequate supports are put in place to enable this to happen
  • Develop and build the capacity of the network
  • Provide information and training for members of the family support groups
  • Contribute to the development of the National Family Support Network
Structures

How does the SERFSN achieve its aims? The success of the SERFSN is largely due to the commitment of the members of the family support groups, volunteers, the management committee and its participation in the structures of the National Family Support Network. There are family support groups in Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow and South and Mid Tipperary which form the network. Family support groups in each county are invited to have two representatives from that county on the Management committee for the Network.

Management Committee

The Management Committee is representative of family support groups in each county. Meetings are held approximately every six weeks. The Management Committee direct the development of the network and members are tasked with bringing issues from their groups, reporting back with information and generally keeping groups informed of upcoming events and developments in the network.

"My experience of Family Support is a very positive one, where people in the same situation come together and share their joys, sorrows and get support. As a member of a family support group I took time get away from my situation for a short respite, this was an amazing experience for me that helped me explore my own thoughts into my personal and spiritual life.

Family support is a lifeline and I am so grateful for it."
